Tucked behind the Museum of Lincolnshire Life on Mill Road, Ellis Mill is a charming survivor from Lincoln’s industrial past and a must-visit for history buffs, curious tourists, and families alike.
A Slice of History
Built in 1798, this lovely tower windmill stands on a site that’s been home to milling since at least the mid 17th century. It’s the last remaining of nine windmills that once crowned Lincoln’s hilltop, making it a unique historical landmark. A tragic fire in 1974 nearly destroyed it, but thanks to volunteers and the Lincoln Civic Trust, Ellis Mill was restored between 1977–1980 and resumed grinding flour in 1981.
Architecture and Restoration Highlights
A Grade II listed three storey brick tower with an iconic ogee-domed wooden cap, fantail, and four patent sails, a textbook example of a small oast tower mill. Inside, you’ll find refurbished milling machinery assembled from spare parts recovered from other Lincolnshire mills. The current sails were put in place in the 1980s and refreshed cyclically; regular maintenance ensures the mill remains fully functional.
Visiting Today
The ground floor is free to visit, open on select weekends and during events like Heritage Weekend and National Mills Weekend. Managed by Lincolnshire County Council and supported by passionate volunteers who guide tours and operate the mill when conditions allow.
